Plain and simple, the Golf Tournament and the Scholarship Fund are about celebrating the Memory of Gary Wayne and the type of person he was to those who knew and loved him. Gary Wayne was the type of person you wanted to be around and wanted to emulate and strive to be more like. A great person who was wise beyond his years and looked for the best in everyone around him. An intense study of the game of Golf and a fierce competitor with a work ethic to match when it came to practicing the game. Gary Wayne lived his life and approached the game of golf in much the same way.
The Golf Tournament is in Memory of Gary Wayne Schoen Jr. and was started in 1990 after he passed away in an automobile accident in 1989. Gary Wayne was the first Hamilton ISD Golfer to win a Texas 2A State Championship scoring a 149 his Senior Year, Class of 1987. The Tournament is held every year on the last weekend in July and has been completely full for a number of years and is by invitation only.
The Golf Tournament started in Snyder Texas and was held there over the first 5 years of the tournament before moving the tournament to Hamilton Texas, with scholarships awarded to students attending Western Texas College in Snyder over that first 5 years of the tournament.
The proceeds from the Golf Tournament go to the Gary Wayne Schoen Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund. Each year Scholarships are presented to High School Graduates in Gary Wayne's Memory. The goal of awarding the Scholarships is to honor Gary Wayne’s memory and to assist students in furthering their education.
The Western Texas College Foundation also maintains a Gary Schoen Memorial Scholarship that is given out annually. The selection is made by the Financial Aid and Scholarship Committee with preference given to an athlete in golf.
What golf means to me: To have patience and not lose my cool. People who play golf have an ambition in life and will usually succeed.

Promise Yourself
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
To think only the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud words but great deeds. To live in faith that the whole world is on your side so long as you are true to the best that is in you.
On behalf of Perry Country Club, GWS Jr. Tournament Staffers, and Gary Wayne’s Family and Friends, We all look forward to seeing everyone again in 2025 to celebrate Gary Wayne’s Memory in the 33rd Annual Gary Wayne Schoen Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament!
